Why Falls Are So Common in Hospitals and Clinics, and Ways to Reduce the Risk

The second most common cause of hospital or clinic employee injury resulting in at least one lost workday are a slip, trip, or fall. One of these incidents can lead to serious injury, reduced productivity, workers’ compensation claims, and even lawsuits. In patients, a slip, trip or fall can be even more devastating, and they can often result in hospital readmission, permanent disability or death.

But why is the risk of tripping and falling 90 percent greater in hospitals than all other industries combined? And what can be done to bring down the number of fall hazards and increase safety for both employees and patients?

One factor that contributes to the number of slip-and-fall injuries in the medical setting is that the floors are frequently cleaned. The buildup of chemicals from heavy duty cleaners can result in even slipperier floors. It’s important for cleaning staff to follow manufacturer’s recommendations for dilution when using strong chemical cleaners. And whenever possible, non-chemical cleaners are a safe alternative.

Another major tripping hazard in hospitals and clinics are the numerous cords, tubes, and other various wires and cables in every room. However as medical technology advances, there are more and more wireless, tubeless and therefore safer alternatives being introduced.

For example, intermittent compression devices for the prevention of blood clots have always been big, bulky pieces of machinery with numerous cords and tubes, all centered around the patient’s legs. The introduction of cordless, tubeless, and portable alternatives designed specifically for the acute setting, like the VenaOne, makes a huge improvement to the safety of patients and staff by eliminating tripping hazards, utilizing efficient compression to reduce the risk of developing a blood clot, and increasing patient compliance with an easy-to-use, lightweight and comfortable design.
